Security Patch 04/20/2010
A security patch is defined as software created to upgrade or fix a particular computer program. Without regular security patch updates, malicious hackers can gain control of a personal computer by overriding the protections afforded by prior security patch downloads. Security patch software both addresses vulnerability issues and improves program performance. The primary function of a security patch is to lessen the threat posed by a new form of malware. The more complicated the malware, the more complicated the security patch. The more complex computer networks often, and quite unintentionally, contain security holes that are ripe for exploitation by hackers, opening the system to attack. In the old days, a computer operator used to receive his security patch via paper tape or punch card. He was expected to extract the outdated or flawed portion of the original tape or deck himself and patch the replacement in (hence the name). Patches subsequently evolved to magnetic tape, then to disks and CD ROMs, as computer technology itself evolved. A computer user now downloads her security patch from a website or receives it automatically from the software company. Software companies frequently utilize this method to download a security patch to their operating systems. A hot security patch downloads without shutting down and restarting a computer. Corporate network administrators prefer to control the installation of a security patch rather than allow software companies unlimited access to their networks for automated patch applications. They also prefer to test patch stability before sanctioning its application. Consumers primarily go for automated security patch downloads. The term software regression initially referred to software regression to its previously incorrect state following the application of a flawed security patch for an entirely different issue. Ideally, the software company should regression test a new security patch before its release to prevent the development of these types of problems. The size of a security patch varies with the number of fixes it contains. A security patch is usually pretty large if it contains graphics or sound files, such as those used in computer games. Patch applications for computer games either address security issues or introduce new rules or algorithms to equalize the players' chances of winning.
